Cheryl Slocumb is taking over the directorship of TCU’s William L. Adams Center for Writing after serving as assistant director since 2009 after joining the Center for Writing in 2002 as a writing consultant. She has more than 13 years of leadership experience in writing centers in addition to many years of experience as a writing consultant and English instructor.
“I am convinced that Cheryl has the vision, strategic thinking and leadership skills to allow the Center for Writing to continue to thrive and contribute to the success of our students and faculty members,” said Vice Provost Susan Mace Weeks.
As director, Slocumb will oversee the staff and tutors, as well as the daily operations of the center. As assistant director, Slocumb coordinated tutor training, the Writing Associates Program, and the development of a workshop series. She has made presentations about writing and writing centers; attended the Writing Centers Association Summer Institute; and taught English at TCU, Angelo State University, Howard Payne University, Dallas Baptist University and Tarleton State University. She has served as copy editor, editor and contributor to numerous publications. Slocumb holds an M.A. and B.A. in English and B.A. in history, all from Tarleton State University.
“I am excited to utilize my years of writing experience, leadership skills, and passion for writing centers in the role of director,” Slocumb said. “I look forward to exploring ways in which the Center for Writing can continue to engage with and contribute to the TCU community.”
The William L. Adams Center for Writing is free for TCU students, offering individualized instruction in all aspects of writing and documentation styles. The staff and peer consultants provide expert one-on writing assistance to students and work with faculty to enhance writing across all disciplines.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank Steve Sherwood for the leadership he has provided for the center since 2002, as well as his careful planning over the past few months to ensure a successful onboarding for the new director upon his retirement,” Weeks said.
