Invitation to Participate in Intro to University Life

Dear Academic Affairs colleagues:

I invite you to participate in one of TCU’s most engaging student success programs and inclusive excellence initiatives, Introduction to University Life (UNLF 10211). An overview of the course is attached. I encourage you to serve as an instructor for a section of this one-hour course in Fall 2023. I participated in 2021, and it was a gratifying experience.

We are looking for enthusiastic instructors who have experience teaching or facilitating and want to engage with first-year students. Sections are offered in 50-minute blocks throughout the day, Monday through Friday. Since this entails an extra 50 minutes per week over the 15-week semester, instructors receive a stipend of $1,500. Please follow the protocol in your unit for teaching an overload.

Zoranna Jones, assistant dean for the College of Science & Engineering, oversees all aspects of Introduction to University Life. Dr. Jones will coordinate the course curriculum, training and logistics to thoroughly prepare you for your role.

Please indicate your interest via this brief form. Deadline is Friday, March 3.

About Intro to University Life

Introduction to University Life is a one-hour elective course that helps new students successfully transition into the TCU academic community and begin to reflect holistically upon their college life. Topics include the purpose of higher education, cultivating habits of college-level thinking and learning, managing time and stress, exploring campus resources, setting learning goals, academic and personal integrity, and living and learning in a diverse, inclusive community. Details are in the attached overview.

Syllabus and Support

Instructors are offered a common syllabus, course training and a built-in course web page in TCU Online. You are encouraged to incorporate your useful insights relevant to first-year students. Each instructor will be paired with a Peer Guide, an upper-division student who will help you facilitate classroom discussions and activities, and promote campus resources and experiences.

This is a unique opportunity to help new Horned Frogs cultivate habits of learning and success in their first semester. I hope you will consider teaching a section. If you have specific questions, please email Dr. Jones at z.jones@tcu.edu.

Best,
Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg
