Class Size Policy Workgroup

The Class Size Policy workgroup was formed in the fall of 2023 in response to the Trustees’ request to evaluate small undergraduate classes in relation to fiscal sustainability. The goal is to clean up inefficiencies and misclassifications, while maintaining important classes.

In Fall of 2023, each Dean completed an analysis of their undergraduate class sections with fewer than 8 students to understand their current situation and the possible impact of any limitations placed on small class size. The Class Size Policy workgroup drafted a policy to be vetted by the Provost and then with academic leaders and Faculty Senate.

The goal is to pilot the final, approved policy in spring 2024 as the Fall 2024 class schedule is being developed.

The workgroup is composed of 4 Academic Deans with highest percentage of total small classes, 2 Faculty Senate Representatives (one from the arts, one from the sciences), 3 Leaders of units with related functions (Institutional Research, Registrar, Institutional Effectiveness), and 3 Associate Provosts leading related projects.
