Faculty Handbook – Faculty Appeal Policy

approved by Faculty Senate, Spring 2014

FAP facilitator and alternate are appointed by the Provost.

Purpose

This policy provides faculty with a reconsideration or appeal of reappointment, tenure and/or promotion denial decisions. This policy applies to termination of faculty, to tenure and/or promotion decisions that result in the termination of faculty, or to promotion denial decisions of tenured or ranked professors (e.g., assistant professors, professors of professional practice, ranked instructors).

The Faculty Appeal Policy applies exclusively to faculty for whom a promotional track exists, and who, in a non-adversarial forum, wish to appeal reappointment, promotion and/or tenure denial decisions.

Appeal processes for the dismissal of a tenured faculty member are found in the Tenure Policy. All other types of appeals are to be addressed by the Conflict Resolution Policy for Faculty. Disputes that may occur during the tenure probation period, such as those that relate to the annual review, are handled through the Conflict Resolution Policy for Faculty.

Access the Faculty Appeal Policy.

The policy was transferred from the 2022 Faculty and Staff Handbook and then reviewed and approved by a special committee of the Faculty Senate in July 2023.
